This blog post is about the reading that we were assigned during our class for making an effective argument in an argument essay. This extract is the first chapter from Jack Selzer and Lester Faigley’s book Good Reasons:“Making an Effective Argument”.
The first chapter "Making an effective argument" has various topics to look upon that heloped me and many more people to shape their argument in a better way for their essyas and other assignments. The first topic in the chapter "What exactly is an argument?" the "argument" has been explained with proper details with some examples which put more light on the topic. Further in the topic there is more enlightenment on what to consider while constructing an effective argument and how it has to be kept up with the thesis because an effective argument and a thesis statement make any essay a powerful one.
The next section is well explained about writing an argument in college. It means that this section has a lot of information that could help college students shape their argument in a better way which is followed by the section of "How to argue responsibly" has mostly everything that one needs to know while arguing. How to begin, how to interupt, how to put your point, what to say, how to say and many more.
Arguing respectfully is a key point that one must consider while arguing because it reflects one's manner of presenting and that is what the next section is about. An important keypoint to remember is to have respect for everyone involved in the argument because we do not have to disrespect anyone in any manner. While arguing we must not forget that the other also has views to put and we must not be the ones to silence their views.
In the section "Arguments as Turns in Conversation", it is said that most of the times ones personal arguments or any other person's arguments in turn helps one to understand many things and that may help to gain knowledge. Also, researching about the arguments is very important as it keeps a track of the arguments being authentic which helps to have a sound knowledge of the topic of the argument. Along with this, keeping in mind about the credibility of the of the argument as it it very important for one's argument to be pretty much up to the mark before it reaches the audience. One must consider the arguments by the main source of the topic, as there must be surity of the argument because it s from someone who is in this field or industry since long.
Readers want the writer to be concerned and well informed about the argument. This being one of the important feature of an argument as the readers don't want to be manipulated or falsely informed about the argument as they trust the person writing or putting out in any form to them. They want the writer to be fair, menaing that the writer must look at both the sides of an argument and not being biased. This affects the credibility and authenticity of an argument. Being ethical with what you are writing is very important, the reason being that one must not leave anything incomplete in an argument as it could convey some other message instead of it needs to say.
